In accordance with the programme of the educational component, the textbook deals with general issues of traffic mechanics, the forces acting on a railway train during its movement (traction, main and additional resistance and braking forces) and the factors that determine them. The necessary data for the calculation of these forces are given. Information on the traction characteristics of locomotives is given. An analysis of the equation of train motion and the possibilities of its solution under various conditions is presented. On this basis, the traditional technique of traction calculations is taught, as well as with the use of computers. The methods of testing locomotives, the history of their development are considered, the role of domestic scientists in the development of the science of locomotive train traction is noted. It is intended for mastering the educational component ‘Theory of Locomotive Traction’ and diploma design in the speciality 273 ‘Railway Transport’ for for the study programme ‘Locomotives and Locomotive Engineering’.
