The textbook covers: organisation and technology of locomotive operation; indicators of locomotive utilisation; planning and organisation of locomotive crews; energy-saving modes of train operation; automated locomotive management system and organisation of the locomotive maintenance system during operation. The methods for calculating: the needs of the locomotive fleet in long-term and operational planning; indicators of the use of the locomotive fleet; and the staff of locomotive crews are presented. A methodology for assessing the impact of the size of the locomotive fleet on their maintenance system is also proposed. The textbook corresponds to the structure and content of the working curriculum in the discipline ‘Operation of Locomotives and Locomotive Economy’ and is intended for higher education institutions that train specialists for railway transport.
